If All Hope Isn’t Lost
(Kevin Johnston 2002)
Headed down to Horn Point going fishing once again.
Just a day away out on the bay, a keg of beer and a couple of friends
Oh that boat was loaded, a charter party had begun
Boom boxes blaring those reggae songs and everybody started singing along.
After about an hour we were rocking from our own wake
When that boat she stated to whip around and that boat began to shake
That bright blue sky grabbed up the sun and they both ran away
And then I heard that crack of thunder and the gray skies came to play.
Rods and reels were flying, and our keg rolled overboar
Everything went everywhere, as the wind howled loud and roared.
“Everyone abandon ship” I heard it loud and clear
That I saw ol’ Shrimper go over the rail after the bear
Starboard side was sinking fast taking water like a sponge.
I held my nose and closed m eyes, ready for the big plunge
As I hit the water I closed my eyes and started to pray
That when I told this fishing tale, I was the one that got away
CHORUS
If all hope isn’t lost, then where the hell then did it go
That tiny ship was tossed, skipping cross the water like a well thrown stone.
Oh Lord let this not be the end.
And I promise, I’ll never get drunk again...
If all hope isn’t lost.
My whole life flash before my eyes, I saw it right then and there
As I paddled to the surface, coming up for some air
I swear that boat was blown away and carried out to sea
The only sole survivors were that beer keg and me.
I drifted and I drifted for nearly ten whole days,
Salt water and that stale ale, parlayed a perpetual haze
Though that keg had saved my life, now we were both halfway gone
And I started singing some old sea chanties as I kept bobbing along.
It hadn’t been five minutes, when something tapped that keg.
Then i felt a rush of water, and that something brushed my leg.
I looked around the surface as far as I could see,
That when I say a gray dorsal fin slicing right for me
I froze solid like a fish stick and waited for that crunch
Here I was in the middle of the ocean just in time for lunch
As that shark kept inching closer I could see his lifeless eyes (like a doll’s eyes)
And just before he took a bite, I kissed that keg goodbye
CHORUS
If all hope isn’t lost, then where the hell now did it go
I’m swimming with the sharks, they gonna pick me clean like an old fishbone
But I now I know I won’t be dying at sea
Cuz that old great white, he took that keg instead of me....
