Mistakes, Misfortunes and Memories

(Kevin Johnston 2005)

I had the chance to stack the deck

before the cards were ever dealt

You know I could have been someone

But I chose to be someone else.

I could have fed on the finest of figs

I could have sipped the sweetest wine

But once again I have found myself

At the end of all those lines.

CHORUS

Mistakes, misfortunes and memories seem to be what I recall

And I got nothing to give away when i should have had it all

I could have lived in a posh estate

Chock full of things I could call my own

But I’m in line at the shelter again

All by myself and all alone.

I once believed that I could fix those things

That would break or had broke

But all my cares were rolled away

And everything went up in smoke

CHORUS

Mistakes, misfortunes, and memories seem to be the status quo

Don’t try to tell me where I went wrong, it ain’t nothing that I don’t know

I could have been the president

At least that what my teachers said

Walked in time to “Hail to the Chief”

And slept in Abe’s four poster bed.

I could have dreamed the impossible dream

But it all was washed astray

And in the bottle there’s a message that reads

SOS I’ve lost my way.

CHORUS

Mistakes, misfortunes,  and memories seem to be what I recall

Yeah, I’m one lucky son of a gun to be standing here at all.

Mistakes, misfortunes, and memories seem to be what I recall

Mistakes, misfortunes, and memories, when I should have had it all.
